Introduction to Writing (3rd-4th) - Mrs. Barbara Nannini This class is designed for students with little or no writing experience. Basic spelling, grammar, mechanics, and the development of basic writing skills are taught in a lively environment that includes reading classic literature, short stories, and poetry. Group discussions and presentations are also incorporated, making learning a fun and interactive experience. This class gently helps students to develop confidence in their reading, writing, and presentation abilities. Class and discussions are taught from a Biblical worldview. A booklist will be sent out this summer.
Ancient History (5th - 9th) - Ms. Carla Shaw From Beautiful Feet Books - “Discover the mysterious and fascinating Ancient world! This was a time when humankind was making leaps and bounds as the written word was established, the wheel invented, and ziggurats and pyramids arose amid societies typically thought of as rudimentary. Each section is built around engaging and historically accurate literature. This homeschool history curriculum will take you and your 5th-8th grader from the beginnings of civilization in Mesopotamia and Sumer, on to ancient Egypt, through the wanderings of the Jews and the splitting of the Israelites into the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, to the cradle of democracy, ancient Greece, and into the rising Roman Empire and the birth of Christianity.” I will send out a book list during the summer of what books will need to be purchased or borrowed from the library. For now, you will just need to buy the following items from Beautiful Feet: Ancient History 5-8 Teacher Guide, Ancient Timeline, and Ancient and Medieval Map. (These items can often be found on christianbook.com as well.)
Christian Worldview (6th-12th) - Pastor Ethan Michael (CLOSED-WILL BE HELD ON OUR ACADEMY DAY INSTEAD) COURSE GOAL: To teach discernment, thinking, and how to have a Christian Worldview to expose the lies of our secular cultures. COURSE SUMMARY: My hope is to stir up our youth to love and good works. How we think and see the world impacts how we act. As a structure, we will follow a reductive classical education of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, all in one course. I simply want to pique the minds of our students through introduction of Christian Worldview topics to equip them for the future. Through a grammar concept, I want our students to know the basics of knowledge and how to think. Outside of Christ, there is no coherent logic, so as a class, we will dive into apologetics heavily. Next, I will start to build their abilities to discern issues in the culture and create logic through what they see and perceive through storytelling. Lastly, I will introduce rhetoric - how to take knowledge, understand what it means, and then turn it into practical use in their everyday life to be able to persuade and discuss with others to proclaim the glories of God in all facets of life.
Period 2: 10:00am - 10:55am
Intermediate Literature & Composition (7th-9th) - Mrs. Barbara Nannini This class continues to develop writing skills, focusing on introducing persuasive writing through classic literature, group discussion, and oral presentations. Grammar and mechanics are also incorporated. Students are taught to write while thinking critically. We will also spend time doing literary analysis, character analysis, reading, and writing short stories and poems. Class and discussions are taught from a Biblical worldview. A booklist will be sent out this summer.
Math Literacy (3rd-5th) - Mr. & Mrs. Bert Sharpton Math can be a struggle for some of us, especially when we don’t feel confident in the basics. So let’s get back to the basics, build up our confidence and have a little fun while doing it! With research based strategies, a hands-on approach, and a small supportive group setting, children will work on sharpening their basic math skills to create a strong foundation for them to build upon as they move on toward more advanced math skills in their future learning. Students will sharpen skills through mini group lessons, independent and collaborative group work, games, some possible project-based learning and more.
Sign Language (6th-8th) - Mrs. Rachel Herrera (CLOSED-WILL BE HELD ON OUR ACADEMY DAY INSTEAD) In this class, students will be learning American Sign Language. If pursued as a career, this skill can give them many interpreting opportunities and provide them with a rich opportunity to interact with the deaf culture. Students will learn topics ranging from fingerspelling, ASL sentence structures, to vocabulary and much more. During this class, students will be expected to sign two presentations. Students will be graded on participation, attentiveness, eye contact, homework assignments, and on their presentations. According to the California Department of Education code "51220. Areas of study 7th-12th grades," students starting in 7th grade need to be taking Foreign Language. This would satisfy that requirement.
Period 3: 11:00am - 11:55am
Beginning Literature & Composition (5th-6th) - Mrs. Barbara Nannini This class is designed for students who have already learned basic writing skills. We will continue to grow in grammar and mechanics and develop writing skills by being taught in a fun environment that includes reading classic literature, short stories, and poetry. Group discussions and presentations are also incorporated. This class helps students develop confidence in their reading, writing, and presentation abilities. Class and discussions are taught from a Biblical worldview. This class’s reading list is the entire 7-book Narnia series by C.S. Lewis.
Pre-Algebra (6th-high school) - Mr. Bert Sharpton The Pre-Algebra Class based on the Saxon Math 8/7 math textbook will have the objective to give the student a good working foundation and understanding of the basic math concepts needed for Algebra 1.
Some previous taught concepts like working with fractions, geometric shapes, simple word problems will be reviewed and reinforced in the first several class sessions. New concepts will be introduced such as graphing functions, the Pythagorean Theorem, and solving algebraic equations.
"Learn by doing" is the goal - there will be instruction, working together on problems in class, small quizzes and doing homework as well. It will be useful to purchase a Saxon 8/7 textbook to complete practice problems at home.
Biology (3rd-5th) - Mrs. Andrea Camarena Biology isn’t just about intricate taxonomies—it’s about capybaras and digestion and flowers and scents. Biology 2 roots your kids in the basics of the microscope and then develops them into budding experts in everything from plants to primates to the life of the cells. We will cover topics such as parts of a microscopic, biological classifications, insects, fish and other water creatures, birds and other flying creatures, reptiles and amphibians, mammals, ecology and conversation, plants, seeds and flowers, and last fungi. We will be using Noeo Science curriculum Biology 2. Experiments will be done in the class with assigned reading and lab workbook, light homework will be given to do at home. By the end of our class, your child will have a comprehensive overview of the biological world. (Information will be coming about potentially purchasing the lab manual depending on enrollment numbers.)
