We have used 2 Timothy 1:7 as the foundation of our discussions on this topic – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” – We are not going to respond with fear but with love and a sound mind.
Foundational thoughts To answer the specifics of how Coastal will respond to the current COVID-19 health concerns for the school year ahead, we want to first remind everyone what we are about here at Coastal. We are strong believers in the principle that God brought your family together by His design and gave you as parents the rights and responsibility to care for and lead your families as you feel led by the Holy Spirit. We do not require you to use certain textbooks or follow a certain scope and sequence as you teach your children. We believe that you each know your children best and have been given the responsibility to teach them according to what you feel they need to know and at the pace that is most appropriate for them. We support you and provide guidelines to make sure you are following the general topics that the state of California requires you to teach, but we do not get involved in the specifics of what that looks like for each family. You each have a responsibility to diligently teach your children as you feel led by God.
We expect you to approach the health of your children in the same way. We expect you to take the appropriate precautions to keep your children healthy and we expect you to show consideration for others and avoid Coastal events if any of your family is showing signs of any of these symptoms. (This policy can be found in our school handbook.) Make sure you are aware of the LA County Department of Health Guidances to assist you in your efforts to keep your family healthy.(http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/coronavirus/)
As always, we expect you to show grace to other families who may choose to do things differently than yours.
Specific Accommodations Here is a list of the accommodations that we will be making to assist you as you take responsibility for your family’s health.
We are planning to have approximately half of our K-12th grade Academy Day morning classes conducted outside where everyone will have plenty of fresh air to breathe. Pre-school will be held outside and Nursery will have outside time as appropriate.
Masks/face coverings will be the responsibility of the parent to maintain as they choose for their family.
Our Academy Day teachers will be given an adequate supply of disinfecting materials and will use those to sanitize their classroom space/equipment as appropriate.
The teachers for our younger students will encourage handwashing at least once during the morning. We will expect older students to handle their own handwashing hygiene regimen.
In the event that we become aware of a positive case of COVID-19, everyone’s privacy will be maintained and a general notice will be sent out to the school. It would be handled in the same way a lice infection would be. It will be your decision as to how you want your family to respond.
With every right and freedom comes responsibility and we expect you to take the responsibility for how you want your family to navigate the ongoing COVID-19 issue. If we all work together, we can look forward to a healthy school year ahead.
